Josh Collins & Operation Torrent Tackle 750-Mile Ocean Race To Alaska

by Neil Shirley June 26, 2018

There are two kinds of physical feats, those that inspire to try something similar, and those that just simply leave you in awe. Josh Collins and Operation Torrent are definitely the latter. As you read this, Josh is underway from Port Townsend, Washington, to Ketchikan, Alaska, a 750-mile ocean trek. He’s just one of the racers taking part in the Race To Alaska, but unlike most of his competitors that are in non-motorized boats, Josh is doing it on a stand-up paddleboard.

Just to give a little more perspective on what the racers will face, the Race To Alaska organizers say, “It’s like the Iditarod, on a boat, with a chance of drowning, being run down by a freighter, or eaten by a grizzly bear. There are squalls, killer whales, tidal currents that run upwards of 20 miles an hour, and some of the most beautiful scenery on earth.”

Because Josh is doing this entirely under his own power and without any sails, maintaining consistent physical performance day after day after day is all the more critical. In preparation and training leading into the race, Josh was introduced to Performance & Recovery Lotion and he knew immediately it would be well worth adding to his small list of essentials carried with him on the paddleboard throughout the trip.

After just two training days with PR Lotion, Josh told us, “I’ve tried it twice now. Very, very cool!!  I added a full point on a VO2 Max test from 48 to 49, which would equal a 20% performance increase. I can’t wait to really put it to the test during extreme distance paddling!”

“Old school grit is great, but there's nothing wrong with superior technology advantages!" To this end, Josh finished the first phase of journey nearly three hours ahead of schedule.

Undoubtedly, Josh will experience many challenging moments out there, but his underlying motivator is much greater than any specific race result, but rather to raise $3,000,000 for a number of non-profit charities that are providing resources to help end Veteran suicide. As a Special Operations combat Veteran, Josh has suffered from four documented traumatic brain injuries and is determined to make a difference in helping other Veterans.
